Pace of change is accelerating in IT-BPO industry

Bangalore: “The industry is on the precipice of a great change where the breadth of opportunities and scale of potential is increasing by leaps and bounds,” said Pramod Bhasin, president & CEO, Genpact, as he opened the session on next phase of growth for the knowledge service industry during the conference on India: Knowledge and Professional Services Hub to the World — The Decade.
Bhasin explained that the Indian knowledge and professional services industry can leap to the next generation of growth if they move with the trends that will drive the industry. He said that access to data and information will drive the business.

"There is massive data that is being generated that needs to be sorted out, analysed and made into sensible information. That is where the opportunity lies for the Indian players.

Analytics, and business intelligence will be where the revenues will come from," he said at the conference organized by AIMA.
When creating business plans, BPOs and ITOs also need to take into account newer technologies that are changing the way that organisations are doing business.

Bhasin said that BPOs and ITOs need to work on processes that can leverage the growth of cloud computing as a business tool.

To grow to the next level, India also needs to move away from per-hour dollar billing mindset to process and project-related costing. Otherwise, Indian companies will become commoditised and not see the expected growth rate of 20 per cent annually.

Ramesh Vangal, who heads the Katra Group, said it is time that the knowledge industry also got in touch with the consumer to understand the actual need. "BPO players need to think beyond the box and use soft power and software to create solutions for the new generation. We should also look for new opportunities in the domestic market," he said.

P Anandan, MD, India Research Lab, Microsoft, took this point further by saying that Indian businesses rely too heavily on people to run things at low cost, while the focus should be on R&D and innovation so that the human resource can be leveraged. He stressed upon the need for public-private partnerships to create a well-trained human resource.

That is when the innovation will happen.

Indonesia tsunami toll rises to 450

Indonesia's Mount Merapi erupted on Thursday for the second time in a week, blasting vast plumes of ash into the sky, as the death toll from the initial eruption and a tsunami that hit remote western islands reached 450. There were no immediate reports of new casualties after Merapi's second eruption. More than 40,000 people had fled or been evacuated from Merapi's slopes earlier in the week, but many started to return after the volcano appeared to become calmer.

Mount Merapi volcano releases lava for the first time since its latest round of activity began earlier this week taken from Cangkringan, Sleman. The volcano that erupted on October 26 and killed 32 people earlier this week spewed ash and lava early on October 29, with government volcanologists saying the activity was not a fresh eruption and could help to stabilize the mountain following its series of deadly eruptions. Indonesia on Sunday ramped up efforts to help those on remote islands hit by a devastating tsunami as an official put the latest death toll at 450, with 96 missing and feared dead.

TCS to hire 50% more students for 2011-12

For this financial year, TCS had offered jobs to 20,000 students across campuses. TCS will start visiting campuses from November.
Ajoy Mukherjee, vice-president and head, global human resources of TCS, said at the beginning of this financial year, they had predicted a hiring of 30,000 people and it was based on the visibility available during that quarter. "In the last one quarter, growth has come much faster, for which we need to manage the capacity as well."
TCS yesterday announced its second-quarter numbers and reported the highest-ever employee addition in a quarter, with 19,293 gross hires. The net hiring was 10,229.
The company, which reported an attrition rate of 14.1 per cent for the September quarter, is also focusing on employee retention measures. "Though we have one of the lowest attrition numbers in the industry, they are not acceptable and we will work towards bringing this down," said Mukherjee.
At junior level, TCS will give promotion on a quarterly basis, rather than twice a year, from this quarter.
Under the employee engagement measures, there are two parts -- compensation and job rotation. Other than increments, which happen in April, and promotions in July, we have aligned the promotions in a quarterly fashion at the junior level. This has gone down very well."
He, however, maintained that TCS would not look at any additional increment during this year. "We are also engaging with employees through several initiatives like Maitree, Employee Connect and other programmes," he said.
TCS is witnessing a change in the mix of trainees and laterals. For this financial year, the company eyes a lateral hiring of 50-55 per cent of the overall hires.
"We had aimed at a trainee to lateral ratio of 65:35. But as things are going and demands are growing, trainee option is limited. So, during this quarter, we did direct hiring. And if the demand continuous to grow like this, lateral hiring will be more. The 65:35 seems to be a bit aggressive target."

SALMAN KHAN INTERVIEW

He has learned to take media gossip with a pinch of salt and now finds rumours amusing.
Salman Khan, whose latest love is the small screen, says he will display his "unadulterated" side as the host of Colors' " Bigg Boss 4", a reality show he accepted only after consulting his mom.
"I asked mom (Salma) before considering it and she instantly said yes," Salman, 44, told IANS in an e-mail interview from Mumbai. "I am going to be myself, 100 percent unadulterated Salman. I will call a spade a spade and have lots of fun," he added.
The show started Sunday and has already run into controversy because of the presence of two Pakistani contestants.
Excerpts from the exclusive interview:
Back as a host on the small screen with "Bigg Boss 4" after hosting two seasons of "Dus Ka Dum" - has Salman Khan taken a fancy to TV or hosting reality shows?
You can say I have taken a fancy to TV or reality shows, but for me, my fans are most important. When I appear on TV, they don't have to go out, buy tickets and watch the show. They can enjoy watching me on their television sets in the comfort of their homes for free. My family enjoys "Bigg Boss"; they discuss it all the time. I asked mom before considering it and she instantly said yes.
So how different was it from "Dus Ka Dum"?
"Dus Ka Dum" was a game format, "Bigg Boss" is completely different. Here you can be more upfront, it has a lot to do with others' actions as well as emotions.
How are you going to add more spice to "Bigg Boss" considering the participants already promise the same thanks to their controversial track records?
I am going to be myself, 100 percent unadulterated Salman. I will call a spade a spade. I am a very straightforward person and I will not take any hypocrisy and politics lightly. For those housemates who play clean, they will always find their best friend in me. Those who don't, be ready to expect the worst. But I can promise that viewers will have the most amazing time. They can expect as much fun outside the house as is expected inside.
Any favourite contestant who you can bet your money on?
'Sab ek se badhkar ek hain boss'... this show is quite unpredictable, so you never know who manages to survive and who gets to meet me on Friday when the next eviction happens.
You are sporting a completely cool look for the show. Did you contribute any inputs for the same?
Thank you, but all credit goes to Ashley Rebello and my sister Alvira (Agnihotri).
What do you have to say about your controversies'-favourite-child tag in Bollywood?
Controversies are fuelled and at times created by the media. I don't react to it and no one around me does either. Since I have come on Twitter, even my fans have stopped reacting to it as they have direct access to me.
Do you think hosting reality shows has made you more comfortable both with the common man and the press?
I have always been comfortable with my fans. TV only helps me to be more accessible to them and we all have fun in the process. Regarding media, you guys discuss my life without even knowing it and I find it very amusing.
Do we also see a third season of "Dus Ka Dum" some time in the future? What about the sequel to "Dabangg"?
I am currently working on "Ready". Then we have two scripts for "Dabangg" and it could either be a prequel or a sequel. Regarding television, I am on "Bigg Boss" season four now and enjoying it a lot... will let you know what next on TV when I decide something.

Before Mumbai attacks, wife warned of Headley's terror ties in Pakistan

Three years prior to the 2008 Mumbai attacks, the FBI was warned of the strikes and David Headley's links with the LeT by the wife of the Pakistani-American terrorist, says an investigative report.
"Three years before Pakistani terrorists struck Mumbai in 2008, federal agents in New York City investigated a tip that an American businessman was training in Pakistan with the group that later executed the attack," according to the report on the 26/11 attacks published by ProPublica, an independent, non-profit newsroom engaged in investigative journalism in the public interest.
"The previously undisclosed allegations against David Coleman Headley, who became a key figure in the plot that killed 166 people, came from his wife after a domestic dispute that resulted in his arrest in 2005," the report said.
The previously undisclosed allegations against Pakistani American Headley, who has confessed to his role in the plot that killed 166 people, came from his wife after a domestic dispute that resulted in his arrest in August 2005, the Washington Post said in a report by ProPublica, an independent, non-profit newsroom.
In three interviews with federal agents, Headley's wife said that he was an active militant in the LeT terrorist group, had trained extensively in its Pakistani camps, and had shopped for night-vision goggles and other equipment, it said citing officials and sources close to the case.
In addition to a detailed account of his activity with LeT, she showed them audio cassettes and ideological material and described his e-mails and calls from Pakistan and to individuals whom she thought to be extremists, the report said.
